skateboard decks

Skateboarding is a sport wich is fast catching up all over the world. People no longer confine themselves to roller-skating or ice-skating. In fact skateboarding has the distinct advantage in that it can be used as a method of transportation on land. This is surely good news for all those stragglers who tend to lag behind. The most important item for skateboarding is obviously the skateboard which is made up of the deck, trucks, wheels and bearing.

Surprisingly, even with the passage of time, decks have more less remained the same .The skateboard deck comes in different sizes and the one you choose would be determined by the amount of control you can exercise and the kind of tricks that you would want to perform. A smaller deck is slightly easier to control and perform flip tricks with while the larger deck is easier to carve and affords greater stability especially when you are a novice. We find that not only does the width of the deck vary but also the length. The width generally varies from 71\4 “ to 81\2” and the length from 30.5” to 33”. Another characteristic is that all skateboards decks curve up slightly instead of being totally flat. This concavity strengthens the deck and the degree of concavity allows for a better grip. This however is not binding for there are people who prefer lesser concave. The grip tape on top of the deck is sandpaper like stuff, which helps you to get a better grip.

The words 6ply, 7ply, 8ply and 9ply have often been associated with skateboard decks. This merely refers to the no.  of individual layers of ply which are pressurized together with a very strong glue in between the layers. The more the number of layers, the stronger the deck, but remember as the layers increase so does the weight of the deck. Some decks have beams, which cross one another so that the grain of each ply goes in different directions. This makes it stronger.
