Gsm phones : GSM technology has progressed to the point where it is being used in almost all countries including U.S.A & Japan & facilitates easy roaming. Countries like the U.S.A have networks now based on GSM but instead of 900MHz they operate at 1800MHz and 1900MHz.GSM service started in 1991.

It was also renamed to Global System for Mobile communications (GSM). GSM initially stood for Group special Mobile, the CEPT (Conference of European Posts & Telegraphs) formed this group to develop a Pan-European cellular system to replace the many systems already in place in Europe that were all incompatible.

GSM was taken over in 1989 by the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and they finalised the GSM standard in 1990.
GSM cellular phones use a combination of Time and Frequency Division Multiple Access.

The Memorandum of Understanding has over 210 members from approx 105 countries and meets regularly to look at new or better implementations to the GSM system. A GSM PHONE uses a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) smart card that contains user account information and becomes immediately programmed after inserting a SIM card.
