Today what we stylishly call hair salons was once upon
time known as the barber’s shop. And traditionally in India we
had the portable barbershops. Well, our age-old barber’s used to walk
around with a bag containing their hair-cutting and shaving kits. They
used to travel on foot looking out for customer’s who needed an oil
massage, a hair-cut or shave; or maybe all three. In those days almost
all women grew their hair long, which was trimmed from time to time by
their housemaid, so beauty service providers for women was rarely heard
of or need for that matter. As time went by, the roaming barber started putting up their little stalls underneath trees. Women started becoming more aware of beauty services and so most affluent households employed the services of women educated in beauty; and the royal palaces had their own beautician as part of the employed entourage. Natural Hair care salons are a relatively new development in the field of beauty. While most big names in beauty products and services are housed abroad, India has witnessed an upsurge in the number of salons and the quality of services provided include professional and personal hair care. This is more so visible in the Indian metropolitan cities. The services provided today include hair waxing, threading, hair cuts, natural hair treatments, massages, manicure and pedicure, highlighting hair, hair style, hair perms, face treatments, etc. And this is not just limited to women. There are hair salons that cater to both the men and women or then there are those that are meant solely for either one. Apart from the rising number of hair treatment salons and the services provided, one can also notice that these services are not just meant for the affluent section of society. As a matter of fact almost everyone is conscious of their looks and enjoy spending sometime regularly at beauty salons. When going to a hair salon one of the most important factors to keep in mind is the hygiene measures the management takes to keep the place and instruments clean. Sometimes we prefer to go to a salon that is not very highly priced, but the result could be disastrous as we could contract certain diseases and health problems, if the instruments are not cleaned properly. To save a few pennies one may have to spend far more in medical treatment. Thus, it is always recommended that you select a salon that fits the hygiene criteria first and then the budget. ~ author Karishma Bajaj.
