itchy scalp

It is a conditioned reflex to steer clear of those who scratch their heads for fear that we may acquire the unwanted head-lice. An itchy scalp could however, be the result of a number of conditions which are not necessarily lice.

Dandruff, psoriasis, sunburn, poor hair care, allergy to hair products such as hair dye and perm chemicals, and a build up of hair styling products (hair spray, mousse, etc.) on the scalp are some of the reasons (other than head-lice) for the symptom of ‘itchy scalp’.

The shampoo you use is not only critical for your hair but may also serve as an effective weapon against the itch. It is advisable to use a good ‘cleansing’ shampoo to rid yourself of the aforementioned problem.

The job of a cleansing shampoo is basically to help you get to the root of the problem. Most importantly it clears out the build up of products from the scalp, hence allowing the conditioner to penetrate to the bottom, thereby making the skin less dry and also strengthening hair right from the root. Washing off shampoo and other hair care products well would avoid such build up initially itself, thus, nipping itchy scalp in the bud.

A particular shampoo maybe helpful at a certain point of time but it is not advisable to get addicted! One must change their shampoo from time to time depending on the condition of their hair and the environment. That changing your shampoo causes dandruff is a misconception.

Now, moving on from what can be done at home, you need to see a professional when you are not qualified to handle a situation. The same applies in a situation where sores and patches of dry skin are observed and the professional to go to is a doctor. If nothing else works, there’s no one better than a doctor to find a cure for your itching scalp!~ author Mansi Ghuwalewala.
