Bariatric surgery is the term that has been derived from a set of two Greek words: 1. Weight 2. And Treatment. The procedures of Bariatric surgery are basically gastrointestinal operations. These operations are responsible for two major operations: - To seal most of the space in the stomach so as to control the amount of food that a person can consume - Re-arrange the position of the small intestine in order to reduce the number of calories that the body can absorb. Contrary to what may be a popular belief, bariatric surgery is not a very easy procedure for people suffering from obesity. It is a huge and drastic step, and it carries is as painful and risky as any other major gastrointestinal surgical operation. The procedure of Bariatric surgery forces patients to alter their eating habits dramatically. In fact the patients might become ill in case of overeating. Patients having undergone bariatric surgery remain at a lifelong risk of nutritional deficiencies. Some of the effects that patients who undergo bariatric surgery experience are that they lose more than 100 pounds in weight. In fact some patients even lose as much as 200 pounds of weight. Some patients simply reach their normal weight and some others remain overweight, of course less overweight than before.
