child health insurance

For parents, their children are the main priority in life. For children, parents can do anything. But the only situation where parents find themselves helpless is when their children are ill. They have to rely on doctors for their children’s health. But doctors have a habit of making the patient pay. If the illness is serious, then this pay goes up by many folds at times. If hospitals are involved then the expenses are something enough to get those children married and still they would save for their honeymoon. The parents have to suffer from both the sides, financially as well as emotionally seeing their children suffer. Health expenses can often lead to financial break downs also in a family.

To avoid such situations one has a very good option, to get his children insured for health. Health insurance is a type of insurance whereby the insurer pays the medical costs of the insured if the insured becomes sick due to covered causes, or due to accidents. The insurer may be a private organization or a government agency. A lot of companies are offering child health insurance. A number of insurance companies in India now offer health insurance for all the members of the family. One such company is ICICI Lombard. Their Family Floater plan insures the complete family under one policy.

Before buying children's health insurance, a parent or guardian typically fills out a comprehensive medical history form that asks whether the person smokes, how much the person weighs, and has the person ever been treated for any of a long list of diseases. The medical history is also used to screen out persons with pre-existing medical conditions. After all the information is verified by the company, then the policy certificate is granted to the customer.

Health insurance companies in India don’t cover all types of ailments. They have a pre-specified  list of ailments and problems under their policy. These ailments and the extent of coverage largely depends upon the type of policy and the company. Many insurance policies often don’t cover any claims within a certain period of time from the starting date of the policy. Nearly all the policies cover hospitalization charges for:
•     Heart attacks
•     Strokes
•     Prolonged illnesses
•     Loss of limb, eye, or other parts of the body due to accident
•     Injuries
•     Maternity expenses
•     Medicines

One should understand the policy, and become familiar with common health insurance provisions, including limitations, exclusions, and riders. It is very important to know what the policy covers. Child health insurance policies generally cover boarding, nursing and diagnostic expenses, which include room rent charged at the hospital or nursing home, fees of the surgeon, anesthetist, doctor, etc.

Some policies even offer fixed cash amount for each day of stay at any hospital for treatment. If the child has a persistent health problem and then the parents decide to take insurance, it might not be covered. Expenses on hospitalization, incurred in the first 30 days after taking a policy are also not entitled, except in case of an injury from accident.
