Diabetics face more problems than the common man and foot problems are high on the list. Many causes can be attributed to this; poor circulation and damaged nerve endings aggravate the condition. Diabetics suffering from neuropathy are not aware of any cut or blister that develops. This is because they have become insensitive to pain in the lower limbs because the nerves have been damaged. They are hence unaware that they have a problem. Even minor cuts left untreated could lead to subsequent amputation.

Diabetes leads to a condition where the circulation of blood is inhibited. Poor circulation would imply that less of nutrients and oxygen reaches the skin and tissues, reducing the chances of injuries healing. Ulcers caused by shoe pressure or by exposure to weather are not detected in time, as they do not pose a problem. If the ulcer is allowed to exacerbate, the infection could become deep seated. As the ability of the white blood cells to combat infection is greatly reduced in diabetics, the defense mechanism often fails against the onslaught of invading bacteria. An unexplained blood sugar level sometimes accompanied by fever could be the outcome. It is obvious then that diabetics must not walk bare feet. Diabetic shoes provide the solution.

Shoes, like clothes must be comfortable. Extra depth and width in shoes and adequate cushioning are vital. Shoes must allow the feet to breathe and must be able to take the pressure off. Podiatrists usually advice specifically designed shoes, which afford ventilation, and reduce dampness. Sweat, remember is an excellent medium for bacteria to grow. The toes and the heel of the shoes must curve a little to ensure that equilibrium is maintained while walking. Pedors are designed for people who are suffering from diabetes. The upper portion of the shoes is seamless. Hence there is no abrasion or rubbing. The formation of corns, calluses and ulcers is also greatly reduced. This is a positive advantage as neuropathy may prevent diabetics from being aware of any blister or cut.

Ambulator Biomechanical Footwear eliminates heel pain and alleviates pain in the balls of the feet. It is roomy and very comfortable and has 3 removable insoles. This means you can gain that extra depth and width that augurs extra comfort. As these shoes are customized, light weight and are provided with plastazole orthotics (insoles), it reduces the pressure on the feet and affords maximum protection. If provided with bio rocker soles, the stress on the balls of the feet is reduced and also the flared sole takes the pressure of the heels. The orthoses afford flexibility, support and pamper tired feet.

Walkers are designed to be broad at the toes, and are fitted with dual density insoles, which cushion the feet from shock. The tongue of the shoe is padded with foam, the shank is wide and the outsole is made from lightweight polyurethane and the forefoot is lined with drilex. This means that sweat and dampness is taken care of.  The insoles are removable to make room for personal ones.  AntiShox footwear as the name suggests are comfortable and have insoles, which act as shock absorbers.

Diabetics must always have more than one pair of shoes. These must constantly be checked to ensure that there are no foreign objects or torn linings; if the shoes are new, they should be broken in slowly. As far as possible, sandals or open toed shoes must be avoided and walking with bare feet should not be resorted to.
