high protein low carb diet

A high protein low carb diet just as the name suggests restricts the intake of carbohydrates and contains higher amounts of protein rich food in your diet. This diet is usually followed to lose weight. Along with the increased intake of protein, consumption of fat is also increased to compensate for calories that would otherwise come from carbohydrates.

This theory of diet comes from the fact that if one reduces the amount of carbohydrates intake, the body is forced to burn fat for energy. Also, the increased protein intake helps the body to build muscles. As we all know protein is essential in not just building muscles but also in restoring and replacing tissues, and maintaining a healthy immune and hormonal system. Milk, curds, rajma, low fat cheese and paneer or tofu, soya, nuts like cashew nuts, walnuts, and almonds are high sources of protein. These foods make you feel full and thus one feels less hungry after the intake of protein rich foods. This is also an advantage for people who find it difficult to stick to diets that make you stay hungry. Along with protein rich foods, low on carbohydrate foods such as green leafy vegetables, tomatoes and broccoli are also encouraged.

Carbohydrate rich food such as bread, potatoes, pasta, and rice should be strictly avoided in this diet plan. Also, fruits that are high in sugar should be avoided. It is said that high protein low carb diet can work well with most people but one still feels a craving for carbohydrate foods. Hence it is advisable to not cut down on carbohydrate foods completely.

Following this diet helps your body to change from a carbohydrate-burning machine into a fat-burning machine. This helps the body to get rid of fats which results in weight loss. Of course any form of exercise is a must along with this diet.

Many dieticians and experts have also highlighted the disadvantages of this diet. Consuming too much protein is harmful for kidneys as it puts a strain on them leaving you susceptible to kidney disease. Your protein intake should be balanced well so it is advisable to consult a dietician before beginning to follow this diet. One should try and follow diets that may not give quick results but give you a complete well balanced diet that also contains a few grams of carbohydrate foods if not more. Exercise well, eat a balanced meal, change your lifestyle, quit smoking and consume fresh vegetables, fruits and grains. This is the way to achieve permanent weight loss.
