India has one of the strongest armies in the world. Indian army is known for its fearless and courageous approach. Throughout the course of Indian history, Indian army has shown an exemplary and dignified approach. Unlike many countries, where army tends to interrupt in political affairs and tries to take control of the country, India army has only focused on doing what it does best; protecting us from internal and external dangers. Indian army is the proud of the nation. Looking back at history pages, whenever we were forced to fight for our rights and were subject to uninvited attack, Indian attack has stood head and shoulders above the rest. We owe our freedom to army forces. Despite the constant struggle and hardships faced by Indian soldiers, there was never one moment in our history when army has let us down. It is truly an honor for every Indian citizen to have such dedicated and disciplined soldiers.
Indian army celebrated its 62nd anniversary on January 15, 2010. This day is also known as Indian Army Day. The day is a tribute to valiant soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect our country and the people living in it. January 15 was the day when Lieutenant General K. M. Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief in 1948. He succeeded General Roy Butcher of British Army.
Soon after the independence, Indian leadership had to fight tooth and nail in order to restore normalcy in the country. There was also a big question mark on integration of hundreds of small provinces that were rooting for self-governance but it was Indian army that played a historical role in instilling democratization in the country.
Army Day begins with paying homage to the martyred soldiers at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at the India Gate, New Delhi. Sena medals, gallantry awards and unit credentials are presented on this day. Military shows and parades showcasing technological advancements and achievements of the Indian army are conducted at the Delhi Cantonment.
