November 14- Diabetes Day
World Diabetes Day is celebrated on 14th of November. The event is marked with various celebrations all over the world. The concept of Diabetes day was first introduced by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in 1991. IDF is a worldwide alliance of more than 200 diabetes associations from all over the world. The United Nations had passed a resolution on December 20, 2006, to designate November 14 as World Diabetes Day. The aim was to raise awareness of diabetes, its prevention and complications. Diabetes is a global disease and needs urgent attention. Many people in almost every corner of the globe are affected with this problem.
The purpose of this day is to inform people about the problem and the care that people with the condition need. Calls are made to governments, non-governmental organizations and private businesses to come forward and contribute their bit in resolving this menace. First commemorated on November 14, 2007, World Diabetes Day is observed annually. The day also marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who invented Insulin for treatment of diabetic patients in 1922 with the help of Charles Best.
Explaining diabetes, it is a disease caused by problem in production and supply of insulin in the body. More than 285 million people in the world are affected with this problem. Diabetes has no permanent cure however; it can be reduced and prevented. As mentioned earlier, IDF is the leading authority in the field of diabetes. It provides diabetic care and preventions to people. IDF is also involved in finding a permanent solution to the problem of diabetes. Diabetes Day is observed in more than 160 countries. Many events and programs are organized on this day. Radio and television programs, press conferences, social exhibitions, diabetes workshops, public meetings, social and educational campaigns for youths and children and other events are conducted on this day. People are informed of lifestyle habits, right food habits and other related health practices on World Diabetes Day.
