April 22 -Earth Day
One of the most celebrated international environments is Earth Day. Observed on April 22 every year, this day is widely celebrated all across the globe. Earth Day was founded by United States’ senator Gaylord Nelson. First celebrated on April 22, 1970 in USA, the occasion was a monumental success. Attended by millions of people, Earth Day received the distinction of being the largest organized celebration in the history of USA. Thereafter, the trend spread to other nations and today, almost every country on the earth celebrates this wonderful day.
Earth Day reminds us of our unique place in the universe. Earth is one planet full of incredible biodiversity. The occasion serves us a solemn reminder of how to protect this rich biodiversity that we are privileged to have. Strong efforts are the need of the hour to protect plants, animals, and clean up the mess created over the centuries. Though, despite our rapid advancements in other fields, not much has been done to clean the earth and protect it. Though, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd each year, in some countries, it is celebrated a month earlier on the vernal equinox.
Earth Day spreads the message about diverse facets of earth. It aims to inspire awareness and inculcate appreciation for earth's environment. More than 140 countries all over the world celebrate this day. Various activities and events are conducted on this important day. Planting of trees, telecasting programs to enhance awareness among the masses, outdoor performances, programs for recycling and conservation and picking up of roadside trash etc are some of the common activities arranged on this day.
Calls for stronger and immediate actions are made to the governments and concerned agencies. Efforts are initiated to stop global warming. People are encouraged to contribute their bit in protecting the earth. Educational programs are introduced to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution.
