October 8 -Indian Air Force Day
8 October 1932 was the day when the Indian Air Force was officially established. Since then, Indian Air Force (IAF) has traveled a long journey. 2010 will be celebrating 78th year of IAF’s proud existence. It has served the nation with distinction and courage. IAF has made valuable contribution to the sovereignty and integrity of the country. If today India is safe, strong and very much capable of handling any attack, then a large credit goes to Indian Air Force for this remarkable feat. As long as these brave soldiers are manning our sky, Indian people can always have a peaceful sleep.
Post-independence, India had to fight 4 wars; 3 against Pakistan and one against China. The miraculous fight back staged by Indian Air Force is the stuff of the legends. IAF has kept adding new arsenal to its strong fleet. Collaborations with advanced nations like France, Russia, USA and Israel etc have made IAF one of the strongest air force in the world. It possesses fastest fighter planes, spy jets and other weapons. It has also contributed significantly to the world peace.
IAF took active participation in Somalia, Congo, Sierra Leone and Sudan as a part of United Nation’s peacekeeping mission. The striking part about Indian operation was its humanitarian approach. IAF was instrumental in casualty evacuation, air reccee, convoy escorting, communication channels and medical services etc. India is one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping efforts.
India celebrates Air Force Day on 8 October every year. Air shows are organized. Other highlights of this grand day are, low level flying shows, parade, aerobatics and synchronized low level maneuvering by the suryakiran aerobatics team.
