March 8 -International Womens Day

There is a glorious history behind International Women's Day. The occasion is observed since early 1900's. It started with great unrest and debate over inequality and oppression of women in early period of last century. Women were getting active for more changes in the society towards women welfare. The first Nation Women’s Day was observed in 1909 in USA. 1913 witnessed the idea of International Women’s Day being tabled in International Conference of Working Women. Since 1913, International Women's is celebrated on 8 March. The day is notable for recognition and celebration of womanhood across developed and developing countries alike. It is heartening to see the way International Women’s Day (IWD) has grown from strength to strength. United Nations has also contributed by organizing an annual IWD conference to coordinate international efforts for women's rights and participation in social, political and economic processes.

United Nations designated 1975 as 'International Women's Year'. Large scale events are organized every year on 8 March. Events are held to honor women's advancement while reminding us of the continued vigilance and action required to ensure that women's equality is gained and maintained in all aspects of life. Many countries have declared IWD as an official holiday. Women are treated with utmost respect on this day. Flowers and gifts are given to honor colleagues, mothers, wives and girlfriends etc.

Numerous events take place on IWD to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Every year, different themes are chosen by the women’s groups, organizations and governments to reflect global and local gender issues. It is up to each country to select a particular theme for IWD. For instance, this year the theme for International Women’s day was “Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all”. There has been a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. Great improvements have been made for the welfare of the women. 8 March is truly a day for celebrating womanhood.
