May 3 - Press Freedom Day
Annually observed on May 3, World Press Freedom Day is a historical event in the world. The day signifies the fundamental human rights of freedom of the press and freedom of expression. Freedom of press has always been a contentious issue in world politics. In many countries, press is still not allowed to cover events in a truthful manner. Their fundamental rights are curbed by state administration for personal benefits. Many journalists have faced difficult times because of their commitment to bring truth to the public. The censoring of press is not really an ideal condition. It is a direct infringement of basic human rights.
World Press Freedom Day is observed globally. The day gives people a chance to pay tribute to media professionals who risked or lost their lives in the line of duty. Various events are organized to commemorate this eventful day. Award nights, peaceful rallies, art exhibitions, press conferences etc are held in many countries, attended by individuals, communities, and different organizations. Awards and accolades are provided to honor those who risked their lives to bring news to the world.
Established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1993, World Press Freedom Day was a result of consistent calls for independent and pluralistic African press. The calls led to the adoption of the Windhoek Declaration on Promoting Independent and Pluralistic Media. The idea was to establish and foster an independent and free press. Independent press is important for a healthy democracy. No democracy has ever flourished without a free and vibrant press. The countries where press is not allowed to opine freely do not have a democratic rule in place.
Every year, the World Press Freedom Day is marked with the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize award which is given to an organization or individual for defending or promoting freedom of expression, especially if it puts the individual’s life at risk. This day reminds the world of the vital role of the liberty or freedom of press in strengthening democracies and promoting development around the world.
