September 5- Teachers Day and Sanskrit Day
They say, “A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others”. How true is that! Apart from parents, teachers play the most important parts in the lives of children. Teachers mold the lives of their students. A teacher has the power to decide the future of his students. Not for nothing, it is believed that teachers build the future of the nation. That explains the importance of Teachers’ Day. It is a day that reminds us of valuable contributions made by teachers in our life. We owe a great part of our success to the teachers. In India, 5th September is celebrated as Teachers' day as a mark of tribute to the contribution made by teachers to the society. The occasion coincides with the birthday of a great teacher Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, who was also the President of India. Dr. Radhakrishnan was a staunch believer of education. A great scholar, he always talked about importance of teachers in our society.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was a great advocate of strong teaching system and methodologies. He was also a great writer. He had written on a variety of subjects including social and cultural aspects, theological, educational, philosophical and ethical subjects. Popular journals of India had his articles. The topics written by him are still considered to be of immense value. His written articles contain depth and knowledge.
There is an interesting anecdote about beginning of Teachers’ Day in India. On his birthday on 5th of September, a group of students and friends went up to him and asked his permission for celebrating the occasion. The great man replied, “instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers' day”. That statement shows the virtue of the man. Since then, India has always celebrated 5th of September as the Teachers’ Day. Teachers and students all over the country look forward to this day with much anticipation and enthusiasm.
