March 22 - World Day for Water
World Day for Water is also known as World Water Day. United Nations proposed the idea of celebrating World Water Day in 1992. The aim was to draw attention to the importance of water as a global resource. Considering the danger of future problems that the scarcity of water will cause during the following decades, it was but natural to draw world attention to this huge problem. Observed every year on 22 March, World Day for Water has emerged as one of the most important days in global calendar. UN takes initiatives and provides support to the nations grappling with water crisis.
Every year, there is a different theme for World Water Day. Theme of the year 2010 was water quality under the slogan, “Clean Water for a Healthy World”. Unless we improve the process of cleaning and supplying water, world will keep grappling with the danger of poor water quality. The idea was to address the problem of maintaining high water quality by preventing pollution. Several campaigns and activities were launched to raise awareness about how human activities are affecting ecosystems. Providing quality drinking water is getting increasingly difficult.
March 22 reminds us of important role of water in our world and lives. It is believed that over 1 billion people in the world do not have access to pure water. Water related problems are causing death and incurable diseases. These problems are also a drain on our healthcare system and economy. Despite the technological advancements made by humans, factors like rapid urbanization and increasing pollution levels etc are adversely affecting water quality. The situation demands pressing actions from every quarter.
This year, more than 300 events were organized all over the world. The aim was to focus the attention on the problems that have been identified or that are predicted to occur in the following years. World Water Day proposes sustainable solutions to improve the current situation. It also calls for actions from general population.
