Efforts are made to educate people about need of protecting our environment and dangers of degrading environment. The idea is to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and action. June 5 is celebrated by almost every country of the planet.

Various events, activities and functions are organized on this day. Street rallies are held to educate people about protecting the environment. Tree planting campaigns are launched in many places. With the help of advertising, importance of recycling efforts is emphasized. Governmental and non-governmental agencies contribute with clean-up operations. Concerned ministry announces several new steps on World Environment Day. Other activities include street bicycles parades, green concerts and essay and poster competitions in schools etc. Authorities pledge their complete support to the environmental causes.

On World Environment Day, several international environmental conventions are signed and ratified by members of United Nations. Considering the adverse effects of degrading environment, world is waking to the dangers lurking ahead. If we don’t take appropriate steps to protect and preserve our environmental richness now, things can get really bad for the global community. The worst affected will be future generations to whom we will leave the legacy of a damaged environment. Global warming, increasing sea levels, melting icebergs and depleting ozone layers etc are just some of the problems faced by the humanity.

The idea of World Environment Day first came into being during the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. The United Nations General Assembly had issued the resolution which led to the creation of UNEP. World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city. The Day brings the focus back on the worldwide environmental demolition and seeks action from various political sources and human resource.
