April 7 - World Health Day
World Health Day is an annual event. Observed on April 7 every year, the occasion reminds us of particular priorities in global health. There is an interesting story behind establishment of World Health Organization. After United Nations was formed, calls were made for creation of an association solely dedicated to the cause of global health issues. And that’s how World Health Organization (WHO) came into being on April 7 in the year 1948. Since then, WHO has carried lots of works in almost every aspect of healthcare in many countries. It has helped in eradication of smallpox and formation of numerous beneficial public health strategies. Approximately 193 countries are members of WHO.
Since 1950, April 7 is celebrated every year as World Health Day to mark the anniversary of establishment of the WHO. On this day, various events are organized at local, national and international levels. Efforts are made to educate the public about specific works of World Health Organization and its priorities. Informational displays for children and young people are organized in many countries. Conferences for health workers are also conducted. Emphasis is given on briefing local administrators for the health hazards facing us and the ways to tackle them. Events held by WHO receive extensive media coverage which further helps in promoting health awareness among masses. Additionally, public rallies and demonstrations are also conducted. In many places, free medical treatment is provided to the underprivileged class.
World Health Day aims to create “awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization (WHO)”. The occasion is sponsored by WHO. Critical health issues are highlighted each year. Last decade has witnessed focus on health issues like mental health, maternal and child care, road safety and health and climate change etc. Year 2010 witnessed WHO’s attention on urbanization and health. Though, we have made rapid progress in last few decades but the condition of economically backward slums in the urban regions demand special attention. Efforts were made to educate people living in such areas about negative effects of diseases like AIDS and TB etc.
