September 27 -World Tourism Day
September 27 is annually celebrated as World Tourism Day. The concept of World Tourism Day initiated in the 3rd session of UNWTO General Assembly in Torremolinos, Spain. Since 1980, world is annually celebrating Tourism Day on 27th September. On the same day, statues of World Tourism Organization were espoused in 1970, so that makes it a very eventful day in history of world tourism. In October 1997, UNWTO had decided to delegate a host state every year as an association’s partner for celebrating World Tourism day.
The global tourism received a shot in the arm with the establishment of WTO. Now, tourism is believed to be the biggest industry employing thousands of people all over the globe. Considering the shrinking global distance and advent of technology and faster mode of transportation, tourism is the most happening industry. It is also predicted that sooner than later, this industry will be generating highest revenues. According to resolutions passed by World Tourism Organization, every year special events and activities will mark the onset of World Tourism Day.
The purpose of this day is to promote consciousness among the worldwide community of the significance of tourism and its cultural, political, economic and social values. The selection of the date also holds importance in the light of tourism season as it approaches at the end of high season in northern hemisphere and starting of the season in southern hemisphere. Beginning October, tourism industry is at its peak till March end. Thousands of tourists travel across the length and breadth of global boundaries during this season.
Each year has a different travel theme. The theme chosen for this year is “Tourism and Biodiversity”. Year 2010 is celebrated as the International Year of Biodiversity and will be officially hosted by China (27 September, Guangdong Province). The aim of this theme is to raise public awareness of the importance of biodiversity to tourism and the role of sustainable tourism in the conservation of life on Earth.
