If you dream of models sashaying down the coveted ramp,
donning your creations and the audience applauding your work, there’s
good news for you. Your dream can transform into a reality – with a
little bit of hard work, admission into the right fashion institute and
a fetish for fashion, you can easily become a fashion designer. The
Indian fashion industry is booming in lateral competition to
the global industry. With the quick absorption of fashion trends and the
right marketing tactics, Indian designers are much in demand today.
Also, with the outbreak of celebrities and socialites and their fashion
needs, the need for fashion designers is deepening. In fact, every
second celebrity has a close relative or friend into fashion designing
today. So, what does it take to join the silver circuit and become a
fashion designer? Fashion designing is an art well fused with the science of textile. First of all, the professional must have the natural talent of an aesthetic sense, a sense of trends and fashion and an acquired qualification from a reputed Fashion Institute. Creativity and imagination are an integral skill set required if you want to become a fashion designer. One needs to be bold enough to experiment and explore new waters in terms of design, colors and fabric. The aspiring professional must have a strong sense of color coding, which colors suit what fabric, occasion, season etc. Next, one must be clear of the type of designing one wants to get into. E.g. there are two different types of designers viz. haute couturier and prêt a porter (ready-to-wear) The haute couturiere is an exclusive designer to select clientele like hi-profile actors or models. The latter is a designer of his or her own brand designs that are available for sale in retail. The haute couturiere must therefore have the ability to feel the pulse and taste of his / her clientele. The prêt- a porter designer must be a fashion guru, one who dictates the trends. The required qualification to become a fashion designer is either a diploma or degree from a well-known fashion Institute. Some of the best examples are National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in various metros, NID (National Institute of Design), National Institute of Fashion Design (NIFD), and Pearl Academy of Fashion etc. There are several options besides a degree or diploma that one can opt for if one cannot attend full-time courses. Certificate courses, 4-semester courses etc. in different specializations like production technology, fashion design technology, fabric styling etc. are also available on part-time basis. Though it’s not always a cakewalk to get in since they have some filtration process like a creative test etc. These types of courses are apt for housewives or even working women as an added qualification. With the help of this, one can start out on his or her own as a small-time designer or apply to fashion houses, design shops etc. Age, education background, gender etc. don’t have much influence if one wants to become a fashion designer. Except, of course, one needs to be a graduate for part – time courses. This profession, though female-skewed, is taken seriously by men as well. With that extra effort and hard work, inborn talent and correct marketing skills, one can achieve success easily in this field. It’s not necessary to be a part of tinsel town to be recognized, one just needs to work his or her way up. There’s place for everyone in this huge industry that is going international as well. So, go ahead, get the admission, work hard and fulfill your dream of becoming a fashion designer.~ Author R. Karwa
