Advertising poses as a glamorous field. The shutterbugs never stop here and celebrities are born overnight from a simple advertisement. No wonder everyone wants a chip of this block. Neil French, Piyush Pandey, Prasoon Joshi are a few names that evoke a wow factor in our minds. They have a fan following not only in their own country but also world over. If you are planning to take a plunge into this exciting career, know what lies at the deep end of the waters. Just like you must know what goes behind the curtains before you take the front stage similarly you must know from scratch what goes into the making of an advertisement. Advertising is like a labyrinth.

There are many ways to enter it. It is very complex at the start and you wonder what the beginning is and what the end is. But as you begin to understand you can get deeper and deeper and enjoy the journey. And of course when your work receives appreciation, you set higher standards for yourself and churn out even better stuff.

A few careers in advertising are: a) Creative b) Media planning c) Account Planning d) Account Management These are the broad categories of advertising which you must understand before you deeper.

In the creative department, you have to visualize and know what your ad will look even before you begin. It can be further broken into:

Copywriters: who write for the creative

Visualisers: who make the ad with designs and the right colour

Creative Directors: who make sure the idea is perfect for the brand and look into it right up to the execution.

Media planning is the department that looks into buying of space for the client. They pick up the perfect media that is apt for the brand, chalk out the budget and make sure the strategy works for the brand and client. Here you must have an upper hand on math and knowledge of publications.

Account planning looks into the account i.e. the client. They meet them personally and try to understand what it is that they want to communicate to their audience. This then is translated to the creative and the media team. The budget is chalked out and parameters are set for every department to work on. Here you must have the gift of the gab and a thorough understanding of markets and brands.

Account Management is where new accounts i.e. the clients are brought to the fold. Ideas are brainstormed at the beginning so you know that you are on the same wavelength of your client. You must be able to assimilate the information and put out to your creative and media team so that they too understand exactly what the client is looking at. You will be rewarded with incentives on every new pitch that hits the bulls eye.
