The role and job of an electrician is
very elementary as well as essential to the society at large. All the
electrical and power systems of factories, businesses and homes are very
much dependent on functions of an electrician. Electrician job
description involves the job of installing and maintaining of electrical
power system along with handling of electrical equipment and machines by
the electricians. An electrician will also install fuses, wiring and all
the related electrical equipments. Every other day we face regular

So how to become an electrician? The process begins with joining an
apprenticeship program. The program combines together two parts of
classroom instruction and on-the-job training under the supervision of
trained and experienced electricians. Minimum 144 hours of classroom
training duration is essential. However, many do not complete the
apprentice program and instead rely more on observation and they learn
on their own. But completing the apprenticeship program definitely gives
an edge in getting a good job.
Electrician courses offer wonderful opportunity to the students to learn
all the details and practical knowledge of the job profile. The basic
criteria to join these courses are minimum 18 years of age and must
possess a high school diploma or GED. Electrician training programs
often last for four years and include 2000 hours of on-the-job training
each year. One more important aspect for an electrician resume is
mention of license as required by many states and electrical contract
firms. To obtain the license, one must clear the exam that checks
knowledge of candidate on parameters of electrical theory, local
electrical codes and the National Electrical Code. To make one’s
electrician career a high flying one, electrician must be physically fit
and should be alert apart from having a good sense of balance.
As mentioned earlier, there are plenty of jobs for electrician.
Simultaneously, Electrician salary varies according to the profile and
experience. Though, global recession has affected the electrician
salaries slightly in 2009 but things were and are expected to remain
very healthy as far as wages are concerned. According to The U.S. Bureau
of Labour Statistics, average hourly wages for electricians was in range
of $20-$22 whereas median annual earnings of electricians were
approximately $45,000..
