| THE FIVE GREAT
LAKES, Huron, Superior, Erie, Michigan and Ontario compose the
planet’s largest freshwater system. Covering 94,000 square miles,
containing 5,500 cubic miles of water and bordered by 10,210 miles of
shoreline, the lakes account for almost 20 percent of the world’s
freshwater and more than 95 percent of surface freshwater for the Lower
48 states. Only the polar ice caps contain more freshwater.
