compare and contrast essay

Comparison and contrast essays indicate the similarities and contrasts between two things. Hence, the subjects of discussion must obviously be related in some way or the other for comparison to be rendered possible. The differences will be taken care of by the contrasting aspects. While writing such an essay two approaches are possible. In The alternating approach the comparison and contrast is taken care of in alternate paragraphs.

For instance if we are comparing and contrasting the different modes of transportation, you would discuss one point about 1 mode of transportation in the 1st para, the same point about the 2nd mode of transportation in the 2nd para. If you have 3 points, then alternately discuss the points about the 2 modes of transportation taking care to see that identical aspects are covered.

The divided approach discusses all the points about one mode of transportation in 2 or 3 paras, devoting the next 3 paras to the other mode of transportation. Here too it is necessary to ensure that the points are discussed in the same order. The first thing to do before commencing the essay is to brainstorm. Whatever you know about the subject must be written down in black and white. Then in the introduction make your thesis statement. This should take care of both the subjects and end in a strong and defined manner. The aim of doing this is to briefly identify the points of comparison and contrast thereby indicating your preference.

The body of the essay should decide on 1 particular approach either the alternating or divided approach and stick to it throughout. Although it is possible to mix the two approaches, it should not leave the reader with a feeling of “so what?”.

It could cause some confusion in the minds of the readers. Usually in such essays, after comparing and contrasting, a personal preference should emerge.

Rather than explicitly stating the preference, it should be allowed to grow gradually and the reader should figure it out for himself from the language that is used. Then comes the conclusion. There should be a restatement of the thesis in the conclusion.

One important point that has to be kept in mind while writing the essay is to use appropriate transitions. Use words that depict similarity such as “same”, “similar” or “like”. In order to express contrast, use “on the other hand”, “unlike”, or “ although.” While writing the essay be sure to cover both subjects adequately. Usually one subject is dealt with at length while the other is inadequately handled. This creates a sense of imbalance in the essay.
Use simple effective language to drive your point home, organize ideas efficiently, conclude strongly and you have a compact essay written.
