Malayalam Literature

 

Malayalam language is owned by the Dravidians and is mouthed by almost 90% hoi polloi living in Kerala. Kunjan Nambiyar, Ezhuthachan and Cherusseri were known as the Mahakaviyathram’. As a result of enduring encroachment of Sanskrit on Malayalam, the sophisticated language manipravalam was formed. ‘Sandesha kavyas’ and ‘Champus’ were composed in the 14th century.

Literary creations in Malayalam are intimately bonded to the nature, earth, moral stories and tribulations in the life of jacks. With the encroachment of Indo-European people to Kerala, the folk rites were altered to a different style. The opus of folk songs was grounded upon a person’s career. The lays of north and south which are known as vadakkan pattukal and thekkan pattukal copes with chronicles and ideas motleying from folklore to locution of heartache. The musical rhythm of folk songs is a special characteristic of the Kerala euphony. The naadan pattukal, pulluvan pattukal and mappila pattukal has its own identifications.

The most former written work in Malayalam is ‘Vazhapalli’ inscriptions. The Portuguese were the innovator of the first printing press in Kerala, in the last half of the 18th century. Clement Patiri issued the first printed book, which is the Samkshepa vedartham. The author of Kundalatha [first Malayalam novel] is T M Appu Nedungadi and it was published in the year 1887. Many excellent literary works in Malayalam are being published every year and it is believed to be free from insular preconception. The flourishing time for poetry, in Malayalam literature was during the period of Swathi Tirunal, in the 19th century. ‘Bhasha Shakuntalam’ is a fantabulous prose work Ayilyam Tirunal. Ulloor S Parameshwar Iyer, Kumaran Ashan and Vallathol Narayana Menon were other famous poets in Malayalam. Some of the present-day poets are Sugatha Kumary, O.N.V Kurup, Sachidananthan and Ayyappa Panikkar. Other present coeval poets are M.T Vasudevan Nair, M.Mukundan and O.V Vijayan.

Changumpuzha Krishnapilla, NV Krishnan Warrier, Sridhara Menon, Kesavadev, Vaikom Muhhammed Basheer, PC Kuttikrishnan and Sivasankara Pillai are some of the notable poets of the modern age. TN Gopinathan Nair, Guptan Nair, Thoppil Bhasi, and Joseph Mundassery have also made fantastic contributions in Malayalam literature. ‘Arangau Kanatha Nadan’, ‘Yanthram’, ‘Athmavilekkoru Theerthayathra’, ‘Payyankathakal’, ‘Ambalamani’ ‘Makarakoythu’ and Sapthaswaram’ is some of the significant works in Malayalam literature.
