Telugu Literature

 

Telugu language is predominately mouthed by the verbalizers of Andhra Pradesh, in India. Approximately, seventy four million people in India speak Telugu language, which is also the official language of the state Andhra Pradesh. Telugu is believed to have been educed from Trilinga Desa, which lies between the temples of lord Shiva. The Telugu orthography was evolved from Bhattiprolu orthography and had a protracted influence of other languages such as Hindi, Urdu, Prakrits and Sanskrit. Telugu letterings and wordings had been noticed in Bhattiprolu, around 400 BCE, however the initial intact Telugu inscriptions were brought out in Rayalaseema.

Andhra Mahabharatamu is known to the foremost Telugu literature, composed by Nannaya Bhattarakudu almost during the 11th century. Nannaya was the initiatory poet who constituted and developed the conventional form of Telugu grammar and he punctiliously enacted the basic rules and linguistics of Telugu writings. For these reasons, Nannaya is known as the first poet or the aadi kavi. Nannaya could complete only the 1st two sections and apportion of the third section of Mahabharata. The next section of chapters, four to eighteen was completed by Tikanna Somayaji of the period [1205-1288]. Yerrapragada, who lived in the 14th century, completed the left out portion of the third section. For this exceedingly great endeavor taken to consummate the epic successfully, the three writers Nannaya, Tikanna and Yerrapragada are together acknowledged as ‘Kavitraya’ of Telugu language.

‘Sringara Naishadham’ penned by Srinathudu and ‘Subhadra Kalyanam, indited by Talapaka Timmakka are two former cusps in Telugu literature. Literary works in Telugu bloomed when the region was decreed by Vijayanagara dynasty. The period during 16th century is regarded as the efflorescence age of Telugu literature. The ruler of the period, King Krishnadevaraya, who was a poet, composed the ‘Prabandha’, which is a type of love poem. ‘Uttara Ramayana’ composed in campu vogue, was a spectacular literary work by Kankanti Paparaju. In 1979, the first Telugu book was published.

Palakuruki Somanatha, who belonged to the period, [c.1200-1240] accomplished various forms of writing styles such as sataka, gadya and ragada. 13th century poet, Gonabudda Reddy is recognized for his literary composition’Ranganatha Ramayanam’. ‘Narayana Satakamu’ and ‘Bhogini Dandakamu’ are the works of Bammera Potana of 15th century. The 1st Telugu societal playact is ‘Kanyasulkam’ which was framed by Gurajada Venkata Appa Rao [1862-1915]. Kandukuri Viresalingam Pantulu, who lived from 1848-1919, is regard as the founder of modern Telugu literature. ‘Rajasekhara Charitamu’ is a well known novel composed by Kandukuri. Rayaprolu Subba Rao and Viswanatha Satyanarayana, who acquired ‘Jnanpith award’, were other famed writers of that period.

Basically Telugu literature may be classified into six categories. The first section includes the period preceding 1020 CE, which is known as Pre Nannanya. The second section includes the period from 1020 to 1400, which is known as the ‘age of Puranas’. The third section includes the period from 1400 to 1510, which is known as the ‘age if Srinatha’. The fourth section includes the period, from 1510 to 1600 which is known as the ‘age of Prabandhas’. 1600 to 1820 is the southern period and the period from 1820 to the present day is called the modern period of Telugu literature.
