The western state of Maharashtra is blessed with beautiful locations. One such picturesque location is Mahabaleshwar, situated at 1,372 meters above the sea level. Mahabaleshwar is one of the most popular and frequently visited hill stations in Maharashtra. Mahabaleshwar is actually a Sanskrit word meaning ‘God of Great Power’. Mahabaleshwar was named as Malcolm Peth under the British rule. Englishman Sir Charles Malet was credited to find the heavenly beauty of this place in 1791. Resorts, bungalows, churches, polo ground and race course were built. For certain duration during the 19th century, an open jail reformatory center was also established in Mahabaleshwar. Among the numerous sightseeing points in Mahabaleshwar, perhaps the most popular one is Mount Malcolm which was built in 1829. It possesses magnificent architectural skills enticing tourists from all over the country.

Catholic Church is a popular tourist spot. It is an old monument famous for its stained glass windows. Another old monument, Mahabaleshwar Club which was built in 1881, is still in great shape and frequently visited by the tourists.

Just 24 Kms away from serene location of Mahabaleshwar lies famous Pratapgad Fort. Built in 1656 by Moropant Trimak Pingle under the command of the Maratha ruler Shivaji, the fort offers a great view. It is a historic monument strongly recommended to all the tourists.

Some of the other points worth visiting in Mahabaleshwar are; Lodwick Point, Elphinstone Point, Wilson Point, Helen’s Point, Arthur's Seat and Tiger's Spring. The best time to visit this place is during October to March. Mahabaleshwar boasts of a pleasant climate all through the year.
