Matheran is one of the most fabulous hill stations in the state of Maharashtra. Situated at 803 meters above the sea level, this scenic location registers thousands of tourists every year. Located amidst the green mesmerizing forest, Matheran covers an area of 8 square kilometers in Sahyadris. The place has managed to retain its charming beauty despite the onslaught of modernity. All thanks to a blanket motor transport ban, Matheran gives you no signs of pollution and that’s what brings visitors to this wonderful hill station.
Hugh Poyntz Malet is credited to discover this exquisite spot way back in 1850. But the place found its eternal popularity under the patronage of Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay. According to anecdotes, he was so bewitched with the natural beauty of Matheran that he decided to make a palatial bungalow there and named it Elphinstone Lodge. He made this place accessible to the people by making roadways. This lovely spot is also famous for its mountain railway that chugs slowly for miles alongside stunning lush hills sides, thick forest cover, plains, sky-kissing cliffs and raised grounds.
Matheran has no less than 33 points for the tourists. You need to stay here long enough to witness the best of what nature has to offer. You can have fantastic view across the Western Ghats or of the plains below. Many adventurous loving tourists prefer to hike their way up to the top. Some of the famous points in Matheran are, Panorama Point, Coronation Point, Monkey Point, Hart Point, Malang Point, Lousia Point, Chowk Point, Khandala Point etc.
Matheran is known for its spectacular views of sunrise and sunset and for that Panorama Point and Porcupine Point are the best options. Some of the other worthy sightseeing spots are Mount Barry, Shivaji’s ladder and Prabal fort.
The best time to visit Matheran is between October and May. You will have opportunity to soothe your senses with floating clouds, breathtaking valleys and mist covered valleys. The place witnesses heavy rainfalls every year. Very few hill stations can match the beauty offered by Matheran during the tail-end of monsoons.
The place is also famous for expertly crafted footwear, unique cane goods. You can also have famous chikki sweet. Matheran is well connected through rail and roads.
