performance management systems

In order to examine the direct relationship that exists between the actual performance levels in an organization and the performance management systems that are in place and functioning in any organization, we need to address three basic and fundamental questions:

-How to conceptualize the Performance management systems
-How to analyze and evaluate performance
-How to establish a relationship between the two

Effective Performance Management systems can be defined as comprehensive customer-driven systems that align all of the activities in an organization with the common focus of customer satisfaction through continuous improvement in the quality of goods and services.

This definition has its roots in the definition of Total Quality Management. In the past, the practice of Total Quality Management has often been procedural and bureaucratic, this has been especially the case in the few Indian organizations where its been attempted to be implemented.

However recently in the Indian organizations there has been a notable shift towards adopting the high-performance approach, which has successfully brought in elements of performance management systems in a soft approach using commitment and empowerment.

Performance management systems often focus on autonomous work teams and high performance work systems. High performance involvement is an effective alternative to empowerment, advocating the use of small teams of highly committed employees.
Effective Performance management Systems usually involve three main sets of management practices that are designed to enhance employee involvement, commitment and competencies.

They are described as follows:
-Changing the design and conduct of jobs through flexible working, teamwork, quality circles, and suggestion schemes.
-Ensuring that employees are given the knowledge and competences to handle high performance work through teamwork training, team briefings, inter-personal skills, appraisal, and information-sharing.
-Development practices implemented designed to attract and keep the right people with the right motivation.
