Employees need to feel motivated in order to give their best. If staff members and workers are not motivated, they will feel lack of satisfaction in their jobs. Having said that, it is important to learn what factors motivate your employees. One way to know it is by making a questionnaire on employee motivation. It is a wonderful tool that can be used to find the ways employees can be motivated and where organizations need to improve.

Before delving further into the employee motivation questionnaire, we need to realize and accept, that success of almost all the spheres of any business, right from profits, recruitment to productivity, discipline or even retention, depends upon motivated and inspired employees. However, some companies miss this simple fact and pay heavily for it. Motivating employees is not exactly a science. It is an art that needs to be pursued diligently and honestly.

It’s hard to name one single reason that motivates all. Motivation works at different levels for different people. For one employee, money is the most basic motivating factor but for some other, recognition and appreciation may play a more vital role. The focus of an employee motivation questionnaire is on identifying whether employees are motivated enough and on finding motivation techniques or incentives. Employee surveys are extremely useful in revealing important information about employee morale. By using motivation questionnaire, organizations also involve and consult their staff member which is a very encouraging sign. Questionnaire, usually follow a generic guidelines but for the unique information pertaining to industry, culture, staff issues, company etc. Some organizations prefer to design their own questionnaires on employee motivation.

While making employee motivation questionnaire, it is important to keep in perspective certain aspects of it. Questionnaire should clearly focus on asking questions that reveal whether employees are clear about company’s mission, priorities and principles. The employee survey should definitely ask questions about the factors that are affecting employees in a negative way. This way, company will be aware of practices that are disrupting level of employee motivation.

As mentioned earlier, different employees are motivated by different factors. To know all the factors behind staff motivation, a questionnaire should have questions that can reveal different motivating factors. It could be competition, monetary reward, encouragement, status, job security, praise, fear or public recognition etc. There are instances when a company has announced certain policy and as a result of that, employees start feeling de-motivated. The survey should elicit such fears and information.

There are several other aspects that need to be covered in an employee motivation questionnaire. Factors like, patterns of motivation in the company, employee empowerment, goals of the employees, opinion about the company, involvement of employees in the growth and development of the company and consistency of company’s internal image with its external one etc. The findings of these entire questions in a well formulated questionnaire can work as a wonderful tool in the hands of management to identify the motivation level of the employees and help them in devising subsequent steps that need to be taken.
