The success of any organization, big or small depends upon its employees. The staff force of an enterprise truly determines how far the organization will go towards achieving its goals and objectives. Business environment is more often than not, chaotic and turbulent so commercial success hinges upon staff using their full talents in best possible way. There are plenty of theories and practices available to the managers that focus upon extracting the best out of employees. However, despite all these, what truly determines the working attitude and performance of the staff force is the much talked about concept of motivation. Every individual is motivated by different thing and certainly, in a different way. That explains why managements world over spent a great deal of time on understanding employee motivation.

Number of management thinkers and psychologists has tried to explain the concept of job motivation. The experiments on these lines are going on since the time industrial revolution took place. One apt definition is, “The heart of motivation is to give people what they really want most from work. The more you are able to provide what they want, the more you should expect what you really want, namely: productivity, quality, and service" by Twyla Dell.

Motivating staff is significant to the growth, development and performance of the organization. If employees are happy and motivated, the direct beneficiary is the organization. If the company has paid attention to foster a positive motivation philosophy, then it is bound to improve service, quality and productivity of the staffs. Motivated employees are more likely to achieve the set goals and make the best use of their talents. They are also likely to have a sense of affinity with the company and attitude is directed towards job performance.

If the organizational hierarchy has not paid attention to ways of motivating employees then staff morale is likely to be affected in a negative way. There can be several barriers in establishing a motivated culture throughout the organization. Some of the most common barriers are indifferent management, absent managers, entrenched attitude, inadequate compensation, and poor work conditions etc. To motivate staff is definitely an art that must be pursued with utmost care and planning.

Human psychology says, all humans are different from each other and each one of them is guided by different motives. In that light, it is not exactly possible for management to perfectly determine and execute steps to motivate employees, however, there are some common methods pertaining to motivation of staff that holds true in all organizations. Smallest of factors can make huge difference in the motivation level of employees.

A small reward, word of appreciation, challenging job responsibilities, sensitive approach of seniors etc can do wonders to staff motivation. The trick is to find a way, where employees and management is in perfect unison. Good leadership always places special emphasis on staff motivation. Employees form the backbone of the company so it makes sense to devise ways to keep staff motivation intact and needless to say, it is always a mutually beneficial pact.
