Mumbai (Bombay) originally consisted of seven islands called  Mahim, Parel, Colaba, Mazagaon, Old Woman's Island, Wadala,and Matunga-Sion. This group of islands were joined together by a series of reclamations.

In 1534 A.D, the Portuguese rulers took Bombay islands by force from the Muslim rulers. The Portuguese built forts at Sion, Bandra, Mahimand Bassien which can still be seen. They named the city as "Bom Baia" which in Portuguese means "Good Bay".

In 1662 AD the island of Mumbai were handed over to the English King Charles II as a dowry gift on his marriage to Portuguese Princess Catherine of Braganza .

 Later in 1668 these islands were acquired by the English East India Company on lease from the crown for an annual sum of 10 pounds in gold. This was because larger vessels & ships could easily dock, and found the islands of Bombay ideal for development & trade. The British changed the Portuguese name "Bom Baia" to "Bombay".

MUMBAI (BOMBAY) CITY

Mumbai is situated on the western coast of India, in the state of Maharashtra.   It is the financial center of India and an important base for trade and overseas businesses. It is also India’s Business or commercial capital.  Mumbai port handles 50% of India’s total foreign trade business.

Hindi, Marathi & English is widely spoken here.

Mumbai has India’s biggest airport, and is well connected by air, road or rail to all the major cities of India. 

Weather  November to February is a pleasant time stay in Mumbai. The temperature is around 20° C minimum and 28° C maximum.

Currency  The Indian Rupee is the local currency used here. One US Dollar is equivalent to approx.  48 Indian Rupees.  All major international currencies can be exchanged at the International Airports, Money changers, 5-Star Hotels and Banks.  International credit cards and major currencies are accepted in most Mumbai hotels and some major shopping centers.
