French music is like a salad as it has a mix of a variety of music styles containing a bit of Latin American, African and Asian music. It is considered the center of music in Europe. Traditional and folk French music can be found in the mountainous regions of Corsica and Auvergne where piano accordion is the main instrument that is used.
The French bagpipe and the hurdy gurdy tradition of music is still alive even though the style dates back to the seventeenth century with pioneering efforts of musicians like Bernard Blanc, Frederic Paris and Philippe Prieur. The hurdy gurdy French music style is a fusion between the piano accordion and violin.
The melody that is produced out of this fusion is simply magnificent. The Trobamuffin which is the music of the southern part of France is played by a well known reggae group called the Massilia Sound System.
France has also developed an innovative kind of music called the spectral music which has now become popular in entire Europe as well as United States. Some of the top French pop music artists are Aaron, Daniel Balavoine, Barbara, Jacques Brel, Patrick Bruel, Calogero, Francis Cabrel, Robert Charlebois, Julien Clerc, Riccardo Cocciante, Mylène Farmer, Serge Gainsbourg, France Gall, Alain Souchon, Charles Trenet, Laurent Voulzy, Zazie etc.
