  Indian media

India is one the largest democracies in the world. It is said that, Indian democracy thrives on its 4 pillars; legislature, judiciary, Executive and Press. The last mentioned pillar, Press is also referred as Media in popular terminology. India as a country is famous for unity in diversity. The strength of the country stems from the fact that, despite the presence of so many regions, cultures, languages, ethnic groups, India has always managed to remain integrated. A part of this wonderful achievement must go to Indian press. Indian media exercises a large degree of independence. Since the time, India got its freedom, Indian media has flourished. Here, Media is free to voice its opinions and concerns. The history of Indian media goes a long way back. The seeds of free press were sown during British rule. Most of the modern day Indian English language newspapers were born during the nineteenth century.

Since the independence, Indian media has grown by leaps and bounds in terms of reach and circulation. Newspapers can be found in all the languages. English newspapers boast of wide circulation. The largest English language daily is The Times of India. Apart from that other famous publications include, The Indian Express Group, The Hindustan Times, The Anandabazar Patrika Group, Malayala Manorma, Dainik Jagran, Punjab Kesari etc.

India has no less than forty domestic news agencies. Apart from Newspapers, Magazines also have a wide readership base. Like newspapers, magazines can also be found in all the major languages including English, Hindi and other regional languages. Magazines like Indian Today, Outlook, The Week, Grihsobha, Kadambani, Sarita etc thrive on large readership base. Several magazines are available in more than two languages.

Broadcast media is no less popular than print media. During earlier times, only two major broadcasters were there, the national television (Doordarshan) and radio (All India Radio, or Akashwani). Both of them are state owned. But since the arrival of Prasar Bharti Act and consequent opening of Indian media to foreign companies, this industry took a dynamic turn. Now, it is hard to count number of number of broadcasters in India. There are so many television channels and radio channels. Consumers are spoilt for choices. Indian media has greatly helped in shaping up of popular culture and the course of Indian history.
