CIRCLE TIME AND CONCEPTS:
These are good pre-reading skills by repetition and seeing the words in writing. Most children know nursery rhymes and being able to see the words and follow along is an excellent way to start them reading. Nursery rhymes have rhyming words. Rhyming means two words that have a sound that is the same.

Rhyme - Art craft idea to go with it.

Little Miss Muffet - Make spiders, using styrofoam balls and paint them black. Use pipecleaners for the legs.

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star - Cut out stars and glue glitter on them.

Humpty Dumpty - Make scrambled eggs. Use the eggshell to make mosaic art (dye the shells different colors) and glue onto paper.

Itsy Bitsy Spider - Make spider webs. Have children put a marble in white paint. Then roll the marble over black paper. (Rolling in a pan or box works best)

Hickory Dickory Dock - Have children glue gray pompoms on top of a picture of a clock. Add the 2 hands of the clock and show them how to make it show one o'clock.

Mary had a little lamb - Use cardboard cut in shape of body and head of a lamb. Glue cotton balls on it. Use two spring clothespins and clip onto bottom of body, for the legs. Color tips black for the hooves.

3 Little Kittens Who Lost Their Mittens - Have children match 3 kittens to 3 pairs of mittens. Make games with kittens and mittens.
Use number puzzles and pegboards to associate 1 to 1 recognition.
