Arabic music is listened quite profusely in many parts of the world. Arabian music is quite similar to Persian and Turkish music in many aspects. Arabic music was evolved in the time of Greek civilization. Many diverse civilizations and art forms have contributed in the development of Arabic music. The influence of Greek, Roman, Phoenician, Persian, Islamic and European culture can be clearly seen in the Arabic music. It’s a culmination of various mixed heritages which has kept on enthralling and soothes millions of music lovers all over the world.

Arabian music was more traditional in nature before 1950. But since then, Arabian music has adopted best components of western music.

This fusion was termed Arabic pop which is basically a blend of Arabic instruments and lyrics with western styled songs. In general, this music is homophonic in nature barring the exceptions of few genres.

Arabic songs focus more on rhythm and melody. Dalida is considered as the pioneer in the world of this fascinating music.

Pilipino Music and songs resources

Filipino music is a mixture of European, American and indigenous sounds. The music of the Philippines has been influenced by age old music legacies of Spain, United States, Austronesian population and Indo-Malayan Gamelan music. Western rock and roll, hip hop and pop music from the United States have influenced Filipino music to a great extent.

The colonizers from Spain and Mexico left their musical marks on Philippines. This imbibed a music culture in the country that had its roots in Christianity and religious music. Musical instruments like the guitar became popular and soon became an important part of the customs and traditional elements of the musical culture of the Philippines.

The Kundiman is a lyrical song made popular in the Philippines in the early 19th century. The song is characterized by a minor key at the beginning and shifts to a major key in the second half.

In the 1920s Kundiman became a mainstream musical style, with many popular performers that included Diomedes Maturan and Ruben Tagalog.

Spain brought the Rondalla to the Philippines in the 1800s which is an ensemble of plectrum instruments. Rondalla is predominantly played in the Filipino rural community life. Banduria, double bass, laud, octavina, guitar, piccolo etc. are used in Rondalla instruments.

The fact that girls are being murdered quietly after sex determination tests, what can one say of rights of girl child in India? As per UNICEF guidelines the girl child must get equal opportunities to education, medicine, healthcare facilities and workplace.
Although the democratic constitution and laws state there have to be equal and full opportunities, the girl child, if she survives barley gets to see her 15th birthday. Out of the 15 million baby girls born in the country, every year nearly 25% of them do not reach their 15th birthday.

India has been one of the first countries to introduce family planning in 1952. The tragedy lies in the misconception that a male heir is all that is needed. But how many people realise that to have the male heir, a woman is needed to reproduce. Biologically she is the carrier of the child.
In many homes across the country, girls are treated with indifference. Daughters are considered as liabilities. Outside one sex determination clinic in Haryana, it was written, pay Rs. 50 now rather than pay Rs. 50, 000 later (as dowry).

Women have no power themselves even though they have legal recourse. It takes guts for a woman to stand up against her husband, in-laws or parents if she meets with dowry problems or sexual violence.  Child marriages restrict the girls and their rights.

There is malnutrition, poverty, high illiteracy and infant mortality ailing the society today in India. Only 40-50 percent women get antenatal care. In Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharastra, Orrisa and Gujarat the registration for health services for mother and child are low (5-22% in rural) and (21-51% in urban) areas.
A pregnant woman is dependent on the mother-in-law and husband for any treatment that she needs. Atrocities against women has risen. Every 26 minutes a woman is molested. Every 34 minutes a rape takes place. Every 42 minutes a sexual harassment incident occurs. Every 43 minutes a woman is kidnapped. And every 93 minutes a woman is burnt to death over dowry. One-quarter of the reported rapes involve girls under the age of 16 but they are never reported.
The government’s initiative of saving the girl child has started with a ‘palna’ (rocking cradle). It is not a rocking scheme. The NGOs and other agencies working to save the girls from becoming victims of infanticide feel this could be a way that parents who give birth to the girl and leave it in the government’s care! The scheme has sent wrong signals to poor parents! In Tamil Nadu where the scheme started off has not been so successful.
Girl child education in India : The constitution guarantees free primary school education for boys and girls up to 14 years of age. But till today, only 39% of girls and 64% of boys get education in Bihar, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. If women teachers were increased chances are that girls in rural areas would continue to study. As girls get enlightened, they will raise better families.

Korean music had predominantly two main genres which defined its classy music. Traditional Classical and Folk Music were the main forms of music in old Korea. Korean classical music had a distinctly similar style to Chinese music. Even during old times, several customary ceremonies and recreational functions followed Confucian philosophy.

Korean folk music in contrast was more of energetic nature and it evolved from Shamanistic rituals. Impact of Buddhist music can also be seen in other cultural activities of Korea.
Korean music can be segregated in courtly, scholarly, aristocratic and religious types. Its folk music is mostly melodious in nature and follows a set of rhythms called Jangdan.

Korean court music can be traced to the 13th century. Three forms of court music are; Aak, Hyang-ak and Dang-ak. However, court music is rarely used now a day.

Korean instruments are divided into three categories of string, wind and percussion instruments. String instruments include 12-string zither (gayageum) and geomungo (six-string plucked zither), haegum (two-string vertical fiddle) and the ajaeng (seven-string zither).

Primary wind instruments are piri (cylindrical oboe), daegeum (large transverse flute), Chinese oboe, saenghwang (mouth organ), panpipes, hun (ocarina), flute with mouthpiece, danso (small-notch vertical flute), and grass flute. Percussion instruments include, kkwaenggwari (hand-held gong), buk (barrel drum), janggu (hourglass drum), jing (large hanging gong), The bak (clapper), janggu (hourglass drum), pyeongyeong (stone chimes) and chuk (square wooden box with mallet).

Courage & Character education

Courage is not something that comes from flying to your heart in moments of need or in emergencies. Courage is not something that can be handed over to you through lessons either.

Courage is a way of life. It is as much a habit as anything else. Like getting up and brushing your teeth in the morning, or drinking coffee.

It’s a matter of routine more than anything else. People tend to speak of courage only in terms of deeds. For instance, they might speak of courage in the battlefield. Soldiers and policemen are supposed to show courage. Or they might refer to courage in the face of devastation. Flood-affected people or earthquake victims must show courage.

However, courage is not merely the name you can give to your putting up with a bad situation. After all, in a bad situation, there is not much one can do expect cope with whatever strength and forbearance you can muster.

But though we don’t notice it, a lot of courage is part of our routines. The man who gets into a blocked sewer shows courage. The man who tills the land, not knowing whether he will have a good monsoon shows courage. The woman who resists the temptation to lavish goodies on her children shows courage. The child who breaks a leg on the football field but goes back to the game later shows courage. The student who is bent on following his dreams shows courage.

The real test of courage is in our daily lives. Or should be.

The courage to speak the truth. All the time. Because lies are the biggest and most obvious sort of cowardice that all of us hide behind.

The courage to speak our mind and not stay silent, simply because we are afraid that other people might not agree with us. Of course, there will be conflicting views. And of course, conflict is unpleasant. But not speaking your mind can lead to much worse unpleasantness.

The courage to stand up for what we believe in. The courage to follow public rules and laws and insist that other people follow them too. The courage to resist those who take easy ways out, which only leads to more corruption and red tape in our social systems.

Mark Twain has said, Courage is not the absence of fear. It is acting in spite of it.

The sign of a courageous person, then, is someone who is feels, fear, recognizes fear and still goes on to do what he or she believes is right.

some quotes on courage

Courage is being afraid but going on anyhow.  ~Dan Rather
Courage is doing what you’re afraid to do.  There can be no courage unless you’re scared.  ~Edward Vernon Rickenbacker
A coward is a hero with a wife, kids, and a mortgage.  ~Marvin Kitman
Coward:  A man in whom the instinct of self-preservation acts normally.  ~Sultana Zoraya
Bravery is being the only one who knows you’re afraid.  ~Franklin P. Jones

December 23 -Farmers Day [Kisan Divas]

India is a land of villages and most of the populations residing in villages are farmers. Agriculture employs more than half of the Indian population. Though, there was a time when approximately 75% of the Indian population was living on agricultural income. But the emergence of service sector and strong manufacturing industry has helped in attracting people from agriculture to these sectors. Yet, agriculture is the main occupation of the country. India had an interesting agricultural journey. The green revolution changed the agricultural landscape of the nation. Productivity increased and India became self-reliant in many agro-commodities. States like Punjab thrive on agricultural income.

However, a lot needs to be done in improving the state of the farmers.
Farmers are the backbone of the nation. India celebrates Farmers Day in the memory of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the ex-Prime Minister. He was primarily a farmer and his personal life-style was extremely simple. He was a son of the soil and contributed a lot to improve the situation of the Indian farmers. His brief stay at the top witnessed a slew of agricultural reforms and policies being introduced in India. Charan Singh’s peasantry background helped him understand real problems of the farmer and he did his best to help them.
Chaudhary Charan Singh is credited to formulate and implement the famous Zamindari Abolition Act. His passionate appeal and magnetic persona united all the farmers against the moneylenders and landlords. He was also a very effective writer and penned his thoughts on farmers and their problems and solutions. Charan Singh passed away on 29 May 1987. Kisan Divas is recognition of his valuable services rendered to the farmers of India. Entire India celebrates Farmers day. Farmers and members of rural community organize agricultural shows, functions and pay homage to their beloved leaders. New policies concerning farming, agriculture, seeds etc are also announced by the governments.
