Babies First Solids
- Babies can't chew until
they have teeth.
- They can't digest solid
food until they are four to six months old.
- Start with one food only
such as rice cereal.
- Mix breast milk or
formula with the first food until it just a little thicker than the milk.
You can slowly make the food thicker.
- Give each new food
alone. Wait for five days to make sure your baby is not allergic to that
food before trying the next.
- Give your baby a little
to begin with. A healthy baby will stop when they've had enough.
- Next you could try
strained vegetables (not corn), fruit and meat. After three months on
solids your baby should be eating some, or all of these.
- All foods have new and
exciting tastes to babies. If you make your own baby food use fresh
products and don't hide the true flavours by adding salt, sugar, fat or
artificial sweeteners.
- Use frozen or canned
products without additives.
- Baby food can be heated
in the microwave but make sure it is evenly heated. It should be lukewarm.
- It's best to put baby
foods into a bowl and store the remainder in a jar in the fridge. Throw
out any leftovers in the baby's bowl.
