Babies Hiccups Vomiting Colic

  • Many babies get hiccups. It doesn't worry them and usually stops after they burp.
  • It's normal for most babies to spill out a little milk after feeding.
  • Sometimes babies vomit if they have a cold or sore ears. If your baby vomits a lot it can be dangerous so see a doctor immediately.
  • Colic describes babies who are upset after a feed, usually later in the day. They scream, double up in pain and clench their fists.
  • Little is known about colic, which usually affects babies between two weeks and four months. If you are concerned, take your baby to see your doctor.
  • What you can do to help if your baby has colic:
    • Feed baby calmly and, if possible, not too quickly.
    • Burp baby after each feed.
    • Keep baby warm but not hot.
    • Lie baby on its side and roll a rug up against the baby's stomach to give gentle pressure.
    • Learn baby massage.
  • There are commercial medicines available from chemists which may help. Check them out with your doctor or child health nurse first.
