Babies Immunization

  • Immunisation or vaccination provides protection from serious illnesses.
  • In Australia many serious illnesses are controlled because of immunisation programs throughout the country.
  • The Health Department, your doctor and health nurse all have information about the benefits and risks of having your baby immunised.
  • Australia has a good record of public immunisation because of the number of people who are immunised. When the numbers of people who are immunised drops, the risk of children and adults getting diseases increases.
  • Diphtheria, tetanus, whooping whopping cough, poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, tuberculosis and rubella are diseases which are controlled by immunisation. These diseases can have very serious complications.
  • Alternative natural remedies are not able to protect against these diseases.
  • Immunisation programs begin when a baby is two months old and continue until school age.
  • Tuberculosis screening and vaccination is given to all teenagers. Rubella vaccines are given to teenage girls, and adults may also access immunisation programs, especially for tetanus.
  • A permanent record needs to be kept by parents. Child care centres, preprimary and primary schools ask to see this record when your child is being enrolled.
