Becoming A Brother Or Sister

  • Preparing a child for a new baby brother or sister is important.
  • It's important to tell toddlers and young children about the coming baby, but perhaps not too far in advance. Nine months is a long time for a toddler to wait. A good time may be when your tummy becomes noticeably bigger.
  • Be truthful. Tell the child the new baby won't be able to play for a long time.
  • Make the child feel extra needed.
  • Things to think about:
    • A children's story book can be a fun way to tell your child some of the things which happen during a pregnancy.
    • If the child wants to, let them help you unpack baby's clothes or prepare the bedroom.
    • Talk about babies.
    • Take your child to visit friends who have new babies.
    • Reassure your child that although things may be different they'll be okay.
