Breast Feeding Babies

  • It is up to you to decide whether you breast feed or not.
  • There is a special fluid (colostrum) in breast milk for the first few days after birth. Colostrum protects your baby from infection.
  • Breast milk is the perfect food for babies because it is made especially for them. Breast fed babies are usually healthier.
  • Breast milk adjusts to what the baby needs so there is no need to worry. If your baby is growing quickly it may need an extra feed.
  • Fathers can be involved by doing things like bathing, changing, burping and cuddling the baby.
  • Breast milk is affected by your health, alcohol, cigarettes, some foods and medications.
  • Whatever way you decide to feed your baby, take time to sit down, relax and have a cuddle.
  • Good things about breast feeding:
    • It gives your baby all the food needed for the first few months.
    • The milk is always the right heat.
    • It's always available.
    • It's the right formula for your baby.
    • You only need to use and sterilise bottles and teats if giving boiled water.
