Poisons And Medicines For Babies

  • Thousands of young children are poisoned each year in WA. Because they have small bodies they can be poisoned much more easily than adults.
  • Use child proof containers for medications.
  • We all know that cleaning materials and many garden products are poisonous, but often children are poisoned by things we use everyday such as:
    • perfume
    • cigarettes and alcohol
    • hair spray
    • cough and cold medicines
    • fly spray
    • cosmetics
    • ointments.
  • Keep your child safe from everyday poisons by:
    • storing all medicines together in one place, locked up and out of reach (including things like paracetamol and contraceptive pills)
    • checking your bedside table and the bathroom to make sure 'everyday things' there can't poison your child
    • keeping cigarettes and alcohol out of reach - even the butts and dregs
    • checking your handbag and keeping your child away from visitors' handbags
    • being a good role model and telling your child some things are dangerous - show how to put them out of reach.
