Safety Outdoors For Babies
- It's important to
realise just how easily accidents can and do happen.
- For most of the year
Australians are outdoors playing in back gardens, parks and pools. Adults
must make sure these areas are safe.
- The most important thing
is to supervise your children.
- Check the following:
- Poisonous plants -
check the front and back garden; local councils will be able to tell
what plants are safe.
- Rubbish/junk - have
regular clean ups; cover up or remove old appliances (washing machines
and fridges); recycle bottles and cans.
- Gardens and sheds -
make sure tools, chemicals and fertilisers are locked away, especially
when children are playing outside.
- Know where children
are, especially when backing out of garages and driveways.
- Barbecues and
incinerators - never leave children alone when these are being used;
disconnect and put away gas bottles.
- Swing sets, slides and
play gyms - need to meet Australian standards (SAA approved); make sure
your child is physically able to use the equipment safely.
- Trampolines - one
child at a time and always supervised by an adult.
- Sandpits - babies,
toddlers and children love sandpits; check daily and keep covered at
night so animals do not soil them; put in new sand from time to time.
- Family pets - can
carry germs and diseases.
- Make sure gates and
fences are in good repair.
Safety and swimming pools
- NEVER LEAVE A CHILD
UNATTENDED near wading or swimming pools or fish ponds.
- Pools must be fenced off
with a child proof lock on the gate. Check local council requirements.
- Filter and skimmer boxes
are dangerous.
- Teach your child pool
safety.
Teach your children to
swim.
