Sleeping Routine

  • Remember babies can pick up on your feelings. Try and relax with your baby so that the sleeping routine is enjoyable.
  • A new baby never seems to sleep enough and parents often feel exhausted.
  • Your baby should sleep at least 14 hours a day. Sometimes babies get overtired so they can't go to sleep.
  • Your baby will feel more secure if there is a daily pattern - dinner, bath, story, bed. This is called a 'sleeping routine' and makes the baby feel calm and safe.
  • Babies need good rules from the beginning:
    • Be consistent, especially with babies six months and older.
    • Keep to a pattern at bed time - meal, bath, story, bed.
    • Try giving baby something which tells them it's sleep time - a special piece of music or toy.
    • Make sure baby is peaceful at bed time with not much going on around them.
    • Keep your older child amused with books, puzzles and quiet things.
    • Make sure baby is getting enough sleep - if a baby is overtired they will find it hard to get to sleep.
    • Sleep patterns change as babies grow.
  • Ngala Family Resource Centre has information, telephone support, home visits and a place to stay if sleep is a big problem.
  • Talk to the Parenting Information Centre coordinator who can help you decide where to get help for your particular concerns.
