What Is Baby Telling Me?

  • Crying is one way babies 'talk' to you. They may be trying to tell you they are tired, hungry, lonely or in pain.

It's quite natural to feel anxious and scared if your baby cries all the time. If you've tried everything (changing nappies, feeding, burping and cuddling) don't be scared to ask for help and advice, all parents need help from time to time.

  • Sometimes babies cry when they are hungry. They will have a feed and cry again. This may be due to wind. Try burping the baby.
  • Many babies are restless at certain times of the day, often when you are very busy early in the evening. Try making your baby feel secure by wrapping them it up snugly or carrying them it around in a baby sling.
  • Young babies should be relaxed and ready to sleep after a nappy change and feed. Sometimes they will still cry. Often all they need is a comforting pat or cuddle. You'll soon learn what the cries mean.
  • Look after yourself. Get out of the house, go for a walk, ask friends and family to mind the baby to give you a break. Catch up on rest when the baby is sleeping.
