Eleven percent of Australian families are single parent families. It may be the result of the death of one of the parents, having a baby without being married, one parent having to be away for extended periods, separation or divorce. A strong, supported parent provides a loving and stable home. It is important for a single parent to have support from friends and family. They also need to have a social life. Single parents have many things to face. Often others behave as if being a single parent is a crime. Single parents do not need to justify themselves. They should be valued and encouraged as parents. Coping with the pressures of work, child care, housing and a lack of money are all familiar challenges to single parents. They have to wear several hats - breadwinner, parent, housekeeper, accountant, cleaner, handyperson - and they may not have all the necessary skills. However you can feel pleased and proud of yourself that you are bringing up your children by your own efforts. It is sometimes hard to find time to spend with a child when there are so many things to do. This is where organisation comes in. Try and organise your day with your children so chores are shared and you all have time to enjoy each other's company. Being a single parent can be rewarding. There are some things that single parents enjoy over others: having one set of rules about how the family will live and behave tasks become everyone's responsibility rather than being things that dad does or mum does extra support from family and friends being able to make decisions without long discussions sharing responsibility for tasks with the children. Children are very resilient, they can usually adapt easily to new situations. Remember to give yourself time each day to do at least one special thing for yourself.
