Sole Parent Family Grief And Stress

• When a family becomes a single parent family the parents and children try to work out what happened, why it happened and who is responsible. Everything is questioned and nothing is certain any more. This is a grief process and this has stages as people often try to pretend that everything can be the same, feel angry again, then guilty and afraid. It takes time for everyone to accept the change.
• There are things you can do. Look at problems one by one. Find solutions. Try to stop worrying. Give yourselves and other family members time. Find ways of releasing your feelings. Sometimes crying helps. Be gentle with yourself and try to talk it through.
• Parents and children in a single family can:
  • try to live one day at a time
  • allow each other to talk and cry
  • be patient with each other and themselves
  • keep busy - time heals
  • get rid of anger by cleaning, going for a walk, getting some exercise.
• Parents in a single parent family need to reassure the children. They may be afraid they will lose both parents. They may also be afraid that it is their fault that this happened.
