what are Parents Groups

  • Most of us need support at one time or another. Parent support groups are usually formed by parents needing to know about and discuss something which affects their child with someone who has experienced the same or similar thing themselves.
  • Some parent support groups include parents who have experienced something specific. Some have professionals as members so that a different level of support can be given if needed. A mix helps both parents and professionals learn from one another.
  • Often other parents do know how you may be feeling and can:
    • share how they felt
    • share how and where they found out more information
    • tell you about other professional and non professional sources
    • let you know little useful things like where you can get a cup of coffee at 3:00am when your child is in hospital
    • give you information which they had to search a long time to find
    • help you to realise that what is happening in your life and family is also happening in many others.
