Parents Organising Playtime

  • You can't always spend the time you would like with your children. Sometimes you have a lot of work to do, are sick, have to look after others or are just too tired.
  • Children need to be able to do things by themselves. Don't take on the role of full time and unpaid entertainer. Give them alternatives to occupy themselves from television to reading to arts and crafts.
  • You can:
    • tell children calmly that you have your own things to do
    • set a limit on the time you can spend and do so whole heartedly (not with an eye on the clock or TV and not while you're folding the clothes)
    • take action yourself - children also need to see you 'doing'
    • be honest - don't make your needs seem bigger or more important than they really are
    • show them you are still learning by talking about what you found out while watching TV, reading or taking a class
    • focus on what you have and what you can do
    • have quiet times when you listen to music, read a book or just sit quietly.
