Parents Separation

  • When your baby or child is about to enter a child care program, there may be some difficult moments in saying goodbye.
  • Good preparation for parents and the child helps make a smoother change from home to child care:
    • Have a babysitter, relative or friend look after your child sometimes.
    • Talk to your children about the people who will care for them. Even if they don't understand your words, your voice and face will show your love.
    • Read books with your child about new experiences.
    • Talk to toddlers and other children about where they are going. Drive or walk past the place, and visit several times.
    • Give your baby or child time to settle in. Visit the carer or service together a few times before you need to leave your child.
    • Come back when you say you will.
    • Try and avoid rushing in the morning when you leave your child. Spend time signing in, putting things away and settling them in to play.
  • When it is time to go, always say goodbye. This can be upsetting for your child as they want to be with you.
  • Tell them when you will be back, eg 'I'll pick you up after you have finished your afternoon snack'.
  • Leave confidently after a hug and kiss and be friendly but firm about going.
  • Good caregivers will be watching to help your child become involved in play and will offer comfort if they are upset when you leave. If you are concerned about your child, telephone the service and talk to the caregivers
